1. Lactose intolerance is a disease.
Lactose intolerance is a food intolerance. It is neither an allergy nor a disease. About 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. The fact that individuals can’t tolerate milk as adults is thus quite normal.
In our society, milk and dairy products are considered to be the best source of calcium. Children grow up hearing the phrase: `Drink milk, it’s good for your bones!’ In fact, calcium plays an important role in our bodies. If you are lactose intolerant, you should make sure that you’re getting enough calcium from other sources if you avoid milk.
There is a lot of confusion surrounding lactose intolerance and milk allergy. In fact, some of the symptoms of a milk allergy are similar to digestive problems. In contrast to a milk allergy, however, lactose intolerance is not an allergy – but a food intolerance.
There are varying causes for lactose intolerance. Generally one differentiates between the following three forms:
1. Primary lactose intolerance
2. Secondary lactose intolerance
3. Congenital lactose intolerance
