Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive
These days, many children from disadvantaged families don’t know anymore what such basic foods as cucumbers or radishes look like. In many families, meals are not freshly prepared.
Either because they don’t have the time or because they don’t know any better, fast food or ready-made meals are resorted to. And nowadays many don’t manage to eat meals together as a family. Children are thus losing
a sense of how much fun it can be to prepare a meal from scratch and what great pleasure it is to partake in such a meal with others. The nutrition endowment fund of the children’s relief organization, Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk e.V.,
wants to engage children and teach them traditional food skills. With this project,
the Kinderhilfswerk seeks to prevent children from becoming disadvantaged, not only in their development but also at school and in their day to day activities, as a consequence of improper dietary habits.
By means of cooking courses conducted at schools, clubs and other institutions, the pleasure of preparing wholesome, delicious meals is conveyed to children and they are taught what healthy nutrition entails. The children shop for ingredients together, cook together and can then proudly eat “their” dish along with what the others have prepared at a big communal table. The recipes are simple and inexpensive as well as partly developed by the children themselves. To make sure that the new skills are applied at home, parents are also integrated in the cooking courses. The project’s mission is to introduce children to healthy nutrition so that they will eat less fast food in the future.
